When Black is Clear
Alejandro Contreras' Solo Exhibition
January 7 - February 2, 2010

Venezuelan-born Alejandro Contreras has an artistic practice that spans painting, mixed media, video and sculpture. He describes himself as a curious world traveler collecting ideas from cultures. He is a collector of curiosities. His assemblages and installations include figurative drawings using vinyl as paint, curios, sculptural objects, video and on-site installations. Typically Contreras recycles found objects and cultural images bearing resemblances to indigenous tribes from his native Venezuela.
In this exhibition, created after extensive travel around the world, Contreras includes vinyl motifs or swirl like patterns, creating a dream-like space and feel. His sculptural media is in patterns, developing various geometrical forms composing harmonious and perfect balance in non-traditional shapes through color using computerized technology.
This exhibition "When Black is Clear" includes untitled images only. It is new territory for Alejandro. He proposes to construct a central theme for the front gallery. Here, he works with his familiar repertoire of vinyl images, this time done at a different and more ambitious level and scale. His style is an open planned schematic room, constructing wood based color forms that are skillfully installed. His set is enhanced with video and configurations in the project room.
Diaspora Vibe encourages young emerging artists to experiment and produce new work without fear. This offers an exceptional opportunity for them to experiment and expand their practice. Since 1996 hundreds of emerging Caribbean and Latin American and international artists have been invited to create new work, on-site installations, film and video in a fast paced succession of exhibitions created in response to the need to exhibit artwork in a safe space. In 2010, Diaspora Vibe continues its reputation of presenting emerging under represented artists alongside well known established Caribbean artists whose work is unknown in the USA. The program spans a wide range of media during the year, painting, sculpture, drawing, installation, performance art and film and video.
About Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator
Diaspora Vibe is a multi - disciplinary art space serving as a laboratory for emerging artists of the Caribbean Diaspora Latin America and other artists of color, providing them with a contemporary sensibility to explore and experiment with new forms and cultural themes. DVG programs include: Caribbean Crossroads Series , The International Cultural Exchange Programs and Off The Wall Experimental Series. Working closely with young artists within the community, Diaspora Vibe Gallery actively promotes the skills and creative expressions of its artists. In its fifteenth year of operation,Diaspora Vibe continues to reach into the community at local, national, and international levels, seeking fresh new faces and expanded support. With an expanded exhibition schedule, participating artists look forward to exposure in the coming months as close to home as Fort Lauderdale and as far a field as Paris, France.
